The short version

Who we are

Bornal (called Grabwise until October 2026) is made by Pedro Souto Ribeiro, an independent developer in the United Kingdom. For anything about your privacy, email support@bornal.app.

Information that stays on your device

Everything you add to Bornal – your inventory, household details, plans, the survival log, contacts, the family plan, notes, and documents with their photos – is stored in the app on your iPhone or iPad. We can't see it. Documents are locked with Face ID or your passcode. Your country and city are only used on your device, to choose emergency numbers and to work out sunrise and sunset; Bornal never asks for your location.

Reminders are scheduled on your device. If you choose to add them to your calendar, they're written to a Bornal calendar in your own Calendar app.

Plans and purchases

Plans are bought through Apple's App Store, which handles payment – we never see your card or payment details. The app asks Apple whether you have a plan; Apple tells it which plan and until when.

Barcode scanning

When you scan a product's barcode, the app looks the barcode number up in Open Food Facts (and its sister databases for other products and toiletries) – a free, open database run by a non-profit – to fill in the product's name, size and calories. Only the barcode number is sent: nothing about you, your household or your kit. Best-before dates are read by your phone's camera on the device and never leave it.

Photo reading (optional)

When you choose Scan a label or Photograph a list, the photo is sent over an encrypted connection to Bornal's reading service (run on Cloudflare), which passes it to Anthropic's Claude to read the text – for example a product's name, size, calories and best-before date. The answer is sent back to your device.

When you contact us

If you email us – including through Report a problem or Suggest an idea in the app – we receive your email address and message. The app adds the app and iOS version, how many items you have (never their names), and a random support ID so we can match your messages. We use this only to help you, and keep it only as long as needed. You'll get an automatic reply with a reference number. Support email is handled through Cloudflare (to receive it) and Resend (to send replies).

The mailing list

If you join the list on our website, we keep your email address, whether you're waiting for Android or for your country, and the country you chose – to tell you when Bornal is available for you and about major updates. It's stored with Cloudflare, and with Resend, which sends the emails. Every email has an unsubscribe link, or email us any time to be removed.

Purchases

Subscriptions and purchases are handled by Apple. We never see your payment details; Apple only tells the app whether you have an active plan.

Your choices and rights

You can delete everything Bornal holds on your device at any time in Settings › Data › Delete everything, or by deleting the app. Under UK and EU data protection law you can ask us to access, correct or delete the information we hold about you (support emails and the mailing list) by emailing support@bornal.app. You can also complain to the UK Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk) or your local data protection authority.

Children

Bornal is made for households and isn't directed at children.

Changes

If we change how Bornal handles information, we'll update this page and the date above, and tell you in the app for significant changes.
